  • Seminole State to host 350 IT professionals for SQLSaturday Orlando

    October 03, 2018
SANFORD, Fla. (Oct. 3, 2018) – On Oct. 6, Seminole State College of Florida will host SQLSaturday Orlando, a free training and networking event for SQL Server professionals and those wanting to learn about SQL Server, business intelligence and analytics. Approximately 350 IT professionals from across Central Florida are expected at the event in the Wayne M. Densch Partnership Center (building UP) on Seminole State’s Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. The Orlando event is sponsored by the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) plus IT companies, including Dell, Quest, SQLCoop, Enzo Unified and Red Gate Software.

This is the ninth consecutive year that Seminole State has hosted SQLSaturday. This year’s speakers include: Janis Griffin, database performance evangelist at SolarWinds; Jennifer Brocato, lead database analyst at United Parcel Service (UPS), and Dmitri Korotkevitch, principal database engineer at chewy.com.

The event is one of a series held annually in the U.S. and Canada, Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

As part of the conference, there also will be a half-day seminar in the campus’s Concert Hall (building G) for up to 350 Seminole State students majoring in information technology and computer programming.

“SQL Saturday is a collaborative event between Central Florida IT professionals and Seminole State College that allows our students to attend a real-world professional development event and hear practitioners discuss important career-related topics,” says Dr. Bill Gaught, program manager and professor of computer programming and analysis. “Students and faculty get to learn and network, which results in internships and job opportunities for our graduates.”

During the seminar, students will learn what steps they can take now to prepare for life after college from a panel of IT professionals and recruiters. Students will also be able to network with companies hiring in the Central Florida area and with IT professionals. Sessions will be fast-paced and informal, and lunch will be provided.

Students can register for the seminar through the Eventbrite website.

Seminole State offers five degrees and 12 certificates in information technology. These include a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Information Systems Technology and Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees in Computer Programming and Analysis, Information Systems Technology and Network Systems Technology. The College also offers IT certificates, including computer programming, information technology analysis and web development. According to projections from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, jobs that fall under the computer occupations umbrella will experience 15.5 percent job growth within the next seven years, translating to over 50,000 new job openings in the state by 2024.

SQLSaturday takes place from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Partnership Center on Seminole State College’s Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, 100 Weldon Blvd., Sanford, FL 32773. For details, go to the SQLSaturday Orlando website.
