• Seminole County Wins Florida Recreation And Park Association Excellence In Sport Tourism Award

    ORLANDO, FL (August 29, 2018)— Today, Seminole County Leisure Services received the Florida Recreation & Park Association (FPRA) Excellence in Sport Tourism Award for the Mid-Large Market category at the FPRA Awards Banquet in Orlando.

    The Florida Sports Foundation (FSF) partners with the FRPA to present this award, which is designed to recognize contributors to sports tourism within their respective communities. To be considered for Excellence in Sport Tourism Award, a recreation department must be nominated by a FSF Industry Partner; Seminole County was nominated by the Central Florida Sports Commission.

    In the nomination letter, Brent Nelson, Senior Vice President of Business Development for the Central Florida Sports Commission stated “a strong commitment to tourism, economic development and quality of life is highly valued in Seminole County.  When you add the strong elected leadership of Seminole County, coupled with their dedicated staff and the Central Florida Sports Commission, outstanding hoteliers and world class venues, combine to offer a formula for success that many other communities cannot match.”

    Over the past two years, Seminole County Leisure Services and Orlando North Sports Tourism have worked hand in hand. Of their accomplishments:
    • In May 2016, the 102-acre, 15-field, $27 million Boombah Sports Complex opened, and was recently recognized by SportsEvents Magazine as one of the “9 American Ballparks Every Planner Must See”;
    • In May of 2017, Boombah Soldiers Creek was re-opened as a world-class fastpitch softball complex after a $7 million renovation;
    • In the last fiscal year, Seminole County and the Central Florida Sports Commission hosted more than 72 events, resulting in an economic impact of approximately $30 million dollars and over 23,000  room nights generated; and
    • Projected figures for sports tourism in Seminole County for the next fiscal year include $35 million dollars of economic impact and over 27,000 hotel room nights forecasted.

    By FRPA standards, Florida has 14 total Mid-Large Markets. This is the fourth year the award has been presented.
