• Markham Middle School Holds Fundraiser For Teacher Battling Cancer

    March 01, 2019
(LAKE MARY, Fla.) Markham Mustangs will rally for one of their own when they celebrate Pi Day this month. One lucky faculty or staff member will get a tasty treat…right to their face!

Ms. Jenni Meriwether, 8th grade science teacher at Markham Woods Middle School, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Meriwether, who joined Markham in 2006 when the doors opened, has continued to teach while she receives treatment.

She told her students upon learning her diagnosis, “I’m in the biggest fight of my life.”

Starting Monday, March 4th students, faculty and staff will donate money during lunches in the cafeteria for one of five faculty/staff to get a pie in the face on Tuesday, March 12th in the courtyard in front of the entire student body. The faculty or staff member who raises the most money will be the “lucky” recipient of a tasty cream pie. Stepping up to help support the cause and Ms. Meriwether are Principal (Lemon Meringue) Mumey, Dean Dr. (Tiramisu) Tinsley, Security Guard (Banana Cream Pie) Bravo, PE Coach (Peanut Butter Pie) Porter and Middle School Teacher of the Year, (French Silk Pie) Frank. Our goal is to collect as much money as possible to assist the Meriwether family with expenses as she battles this disease.

Principal Mumey said, “We needed a way to give back to someone who has given so much to the Markham students and Pi Day is a great opportunity to help raise money for Ms. Meriwether”.

Donations will be collected during all three lunches beginning Monday, March 4th through Monday, March 11th. Donations may also be made at the front desk.

    Got Pi?
Pi Day is a holiday that celebrates one of the most iconic numbers in math: 3.14. Inspired by previous Pi Day traditions, the math department decided to let the students have some fun by holding a contest to see who can recite the most digits of pi. The student who wins will receive a prize compliments of PTSA.
